Physikalisch-Meteorologisches Observatorium Davos and World Radiation center (PMOD)

The PMOD/WRC (Physikalisch-Meteorologisches Observatorium Davos / World Radiation Center) is a leading Swiss research institute in Davos, Switzerland, serving as an international calibration center mandated by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) for solar and atmospheric radiation instruments, developing high-precision radiometers for space and ground use, and researching the Sun's influence on Earth's climate. PMOD/WRC also maintains the world's longest continuous total ozone column measurements, starting in 1926. Since its establishment in 1907, PMOD/WRC has been addressing questions regarding the radiation energy budget in the terrestrial atmosphere, as well as problems in solar physics in order to understand the mechanisms concerning the variability of solar irradiance. The Climate Group of the PMOD/WRC studies natural and anthropogenic influences on the Earth’s atmosphere, ozone layer and climate in the past, present and future using numerical models and observations. For this purpose, it has developed its own dedicated global model SOCOL, which can interactively treat all processes and major feedbacks related to the ozone layer and its connection to the Earth's system. PMOD/WRC is traditionally widely involved in all communities focused on chemistry-climate modelling, solar physics, and monitoring of ozone and atmospheric radiation, and is actively particpating in numerous international research projects. PMOD/WRC also teaches students as a part of its research mission, with students registered at the Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zürich) and the Universities of Zürich and Bern.
