von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics (VKI)
VKI is a non-profit international educational and scientific organization that provides postgraduate training in fluid dynamics and carries out advanced research on the experimental, computational, and theoretical aspects of gas and liquid flows. The Aeronautics and Aerospace Department specializes in the modelling, simulation, and experimental validation of atmospheric-entry flows and thermal protection systems.
Experimental campaigns are conducted in VKI’s world-class Mach 14 and Mach 6 wind tunnels and its inductively coupled plasma facilities, supported by dedicated, state-of-the-art measurement techniques. Since 2011, the Aeronautics and Aerospace Department has served as a reference laboratory for ESA. VKI is also strongly committed to “clean space” through research on the demise and fragmentation of space debris, computational modelling, material testing, and ground-based characterization.
