Dr. Mathieu Balesdent

Dr. Mathieu Balesdent is a specialist in Multidisciplinary Design Optimization at ONERA, and specialized in launch vehicle design. He defended his PhD thesis on Launch Vehicle Design in 2011 and his Habilitation Degree in 2021. He is currently Director of Research at ONERA and responsible of the scientific thematic: “Design and Optimization of Aerospace System”. He is also responsible of the ONERA’s roadmap on Reusable Launch Vehicles. He has published more than 30 papers in scientific journals (most for Springer and Elsevier). He participated to more than 40 conference papers international congresses. He wrote two books for Elsevier and Springer and 5 book-chapters. He is a regular lecturer at Ecole Polytechnique, ISAE – Supaero and “Ecole Supérieure Léonard de Vinci”. He supervised 12 PhD theses and more than 20 master internships. Finally, he is involved as the Launch Vehicle expert in the Space Academy of “Ile de France” that gathers all the universities of this French region. Dr. Balesdent and Dr. Brevault have collaborated French Space Agency (CNES), UK-Space agency, several European industrials (ArianeGroup, Reaction Engines) inside projects dealing with the design of new reusable launch vehicles architectures. In addition, they have a large number of collaboration with academics (Ecole Polytechnique, ISAE – Supaero, Ecole des Mines de St Etienne, INRIA, University of Florida, University of Arizona, NASA).
